The Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSAuk) held its highly anticipated annual National Boccia Tournament during the first weekend of October, and this year’s event was a remarkable success. With a record-breaking 105 entries for the 2024 competition, the tournament was filled with excitement, competition, as participants from across the country gathered to showcase their Boccia skills.

The tournament took place over two action-packed days, making full use of eight courts at the venue. Competitors ranged from as young as 4 years old—marking the first time we’ve had such young participants—all the way to seasoned Masters. It was an inspiring mix of youth and experience, with athletes of all ages coming together to enjoy the sport.

Saturday: Group Stages of Singles, Pairs, and Teams

Saturday’s schedule kicked off with the group stages of Singles, Pairs, and Teams. The day began with Boccia Singles, where players of all ages took to the courts, and the level of talent on display was impressive. For many, it was their first time competing, and they embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. The DSAuk’s mission of introducing sports to athletes of all abilities was clearly in action, with newcomers having the opportunity to “have a go,” while older athletes engaged in fierce competition and friendly rivalries.

The afternoon saw the transition to Boccia Pairs, followed by Boccia Teams, bringing a new dynamic to the day’s play. It was incredible to see athletes work together, developing their teamwork and strategy as they progressed through the competition.

Sunday: Finals and the Peter Sugden Trophy

Sunday’s competition began promptly at 9:00 AM, with another full day of Boccia that included the semi-finals and finals in all age groups and disciplines. The level of play was outstanding across all categories, with each athlete giving it their all to secure a win.

The highlight of the weekend was the final competition—the prestigious Peter Sugden Trophy. This round-robin event is played between the winners of the Junior, Senior, and Masters Singles Boccia categories, and this year saw some thrilling matches. After a hard-fought competition, Imogen Hall emerged victorious, winning the Peter Sugden Trophy for the first time. Congratulations, Imogen, on a fantastic achievement!

A Community of Support and Fun

The DSAuk National Boccia Tournament is not just about the competition—it’s also a fantastic opportunity for people with dwarfism to come together, stay active, and build friendships. Throughout the weekend, there was a wonderful sense of community, with athletes and families enjoying the fun, supporting one another, and celebrating each other’s successes.

We would like to extend a massive thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success. Without your dedication and hard work, events like this wouldn’t be possible.

As the 2024 Boccia Tournament draws to a close, we look forward to more exciting competitions in the future and continuing to promote sports for all athletes, regardless of age or ability. Well done to everyone who took part—see you next year!
