The 31st National Games Weekend hosted by the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSAuk) was an extraordinary success, filled with competition and celebration. The event took place from Friday, 24th May to Monday, 27th May, with activities spanning multiple sports disciplines and bringing together members from across the nation.

Friday: Powerlifting and Taster Sessions

The excitement kicked off on Friday, 24th May, as members began arriving in the Midlands. The day started with two fantastic taster sessions in powerlifting, delivered by British Weightlifting. These sessions provided an excellent opportunity for members to try powerlifting for the first time, sparking newfound interests and confidence. The evening culminated with the Powerlifting competition, where both new and seasoned members showcased their strength and determination on the bench.

Saturday: Official Opening and Track & Field Events

Saturday, 25th May, marked the official start of the games. The opening ceremony was a highlight, featuring an empowering speech by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, followed by the heartfelt reading of the athletes’ pledge by George and Sid. A poignant minute of silence was observed before the competitions began.

The track and field events saw participants of all ages competing under a clear  sky. Medals were awarded for various events, celebrating both athletic prowess and the spirit of participation. Special “first timers” medals were given to those attending their first National Games, a tradition that fosters inclusivity and encouragement.

The day concluded with the thrilling 4x100m relay, a race that encapsulated the teamwork and enthusiasm of the event. After the final race, attendees made their way back for the gala, a night of celebration and reflection on the day’s achievements.

Sunday: Team Sports and New Activities

Sunday continued the momentum with a diverse range of sports. Junior and senior members participated in intense basketball and hockey games, showcasing their skills and teamwork. The day also featured New Age Kurling, cycling, and shooting, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.

 

Throughout the weekend, the spirit of the DSAuk community was palpable. Members supported each other, celebrated victories, and created lasting memories.

The 31st National Games Weekend wrapped up on Monday with an action-packed day of swimming and football, marking the end of an unforgettable event filled with sportsmanship and community spirit.

Swimming Gala: A Splashing Success

The day began with the eagerly awaited Swimming Gala. Competitors of all ages took to the pool, participating in a variety of races that showcased their dedication and training. 

The swimming events culminated in a vibrant medals ceremony, celebrating the achievements of all participants. Cheers and applause filled the venue as winners proudly received their medals from DSAuk patron Ellie Simmonds.

Indoor Football Tournament: Thrilling Matches Amidst the Weather

As the weather turned, the event seamlessly transitioned indoors for the football tournament. The indoor setting did nothing to dampen the excitement, with thrilling matches played by the ladies, men’s, and junior teams. Each game was a testament to the players’ enthusiasm, teamwork, and skill, making for an exhilarating finale to the competition.

Spectators were treated to a series of fast-paced, high-energy matches, each one more gripping than the last. The atmosphere was electric, with fans cheering on their favorite teams and players, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Closing Ceremony: A Heartfelt Conclusion

The event concluded with a second medals ceremony, recognising the outstanding performances in the football tournament. The Chair of DSAuk delivered a heartfelt closing speech, expressing gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the success of the weekend.
