Recent results for DSA athletes
The Dwarf Sports Association has had lots of successful high level athletes competing all over the world recently. Our athletes have done really well and here is a rundown on what they have been achieving.
Over the weekend of the 3rd to the 5th June the DSA’s best badminton players have been out in Dortmund competing in the German Open International as part of the English team. Andrew Martin won the men’s singles and was strong in the doubles and mixed doubles. Niall McVeigh from the DSA Northern Ireland region pushed Andrew hard in the final but had to settle for a silver medal this time. Krysten Coombs and Luke Irvine also played well in this prestigious event.
In Manchester over the bank holiday weekend several DSA members were competing in the BT Paralympic World Cup. Our very own patrons Eleanor Simmonds and Matthew Whorwood both competed in the swimming.
Great Britain were crowned BT Paralympic World Cup trophy champions on the final day of the competition, which saw the world’s best Paralympic swimmers in action at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
Double Paralympic champion Eleanor Simmonds was in fine form as she narrowly missed breaking her own world record in the SM6 200m individual medley, with a time of 3:09.36. Elle had a strong freestyle leg to come within twelve one hundredths of a second of her record and was closely followed by fellow Brit Natalie Jones in 3:12.19, with BT ambassador Liz Johnson fifth in a time of 3:24.48.
Matt Whorwood was awarded a silver medal in the SM6 200m individual medley which saw the Rest of the World’s Yevheniy Bohodayko take the title in 2:42.13 and DSA’s Matthew Whorwood finish in second in 3:02.69.
In the field athletics Sophie Hancock picked up a bronze medal in the shot put very narrowly missing out on the silver medal, Holly Niell threw a new personal best and Vicky Silk also threw well the DSA ladies showing that they are in contention for a medal in 2012.
In Holland Sean Clare threw a new personal best of 9.12 in the shot put and is improving all the time. Sean is the first of the DSA’s male throwers to get over the 2012 “B” qualifying distance for Shot Put and looks set to have a storming 2011 season.
Last but definitely not least is the DSA Boccia team. Having had a very successful first season in the CP Boccia leagues they achieved a third place at the end of the season. More than respectable for their first season. They’ll be looking to win it next year. Well done to April Barrett, Penny Dean, Arthur Dean, Steve Scott and Liz Holland, keep up the good work.
