Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships 2010/11 Series
Welsh Leg – Cardiff, 10th-12th September 2010
The English contingent again dominated the medal podium as the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff hosted the first event in the 2010/11 Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships series. After an action packed weekend, English players came out on top in 17 of the 25 finals, with 14 Silvers medals also to show for their efforts. Indeed, every final had some English involvement.
Allison Pearson, a former Junior international player and now a BADMINTON England Performance Centre Advisor, was delighted with the strong performance of the England team. Although there were many strong performances over the weekend, Allison picked out a couple of noteworthy efforts:
“In the Women’s Wheelchair Singles Paula Robinson (Notts) had a very hard fought match against Scotland’s Morag Johnson, before sadly losing falling victim in the end to Morag’s impeccable accuracy. In the Dwarf Singles England’s Ollie Clark (Kent) was impressive as he took the Gold, beating Ireland’s Niall McVeigh in 2 straight games. He then teamed up with long term doubles partner Andrew Martin (Kent) to lift the Dwarf Men’s Doubles crown 21-18, 21-14 to continue their unbeaten competitive record together.”
Allison also sees plenty to look forward to in the future:
“Jack Shephard, Lee Hill and Isaak Dalglish are all junior Dwarf players that have achieved a remarkable level of technical skill and ability for players of their respective ages, and show great potential to be future medal prospects for England.”
The next leg of the series to look forward to is in Dublin from the 19th-21st November.
