Final day of the European Swimming Championships

Matthew and Eleanor win more medals on the last day of the Championships.

The British Disability Swimming Team won a further five gold, six silver and three bronze medals to add to their already impressive medal tally on the fifth day of competition at the IPC Swimming European Championships.

The gold medallists consisted of Eleanor Simmonds, Heather Frederiksen, Matthew Walker, Louise Watkin and Daniel Pepper.

Eleanor Simmonds claimed her fourth European title in the women’s S6 100m Freestyle after beating team-mate Natalie Jones to the wall. Paralympic Champion Simmonds put in an excellent performance and looked strong throughout the race. She touched the wall in a time of 1:17.57 and after the race she said:

“I am really happy to have won that because every time I get in to race I want to win. It is so great to have won that. I have moved on from Beijing because I have come here and won four gold medals instead of the two.”

The men’s 20 point 4x50m Freestyle Relay saw the British team, which consisted of James Anderson, Matthew Whorwood, Sascha Kindred and Anthony Stephens, win silver after putting in a strong performance. They completed the race in 2:58.36.

Matt Whorwood also won his heat in the S6 100m freestyle, he then went on to finish fourth in the final in a time of 1:11.45. Matt was just piped to a bronze medal by 0.35 of a second by the German Swen Michaelis.
